Trichocereus grandiflorus is the horticultural name by which this cactus is widely known; however, modern taxonomic sources treat it within the species Echinopsis huascha, with the form frequently listed as Echinopsis huascha var. grandiflora. It is native to Catamarca, Argentina, where it grows in mountainous areas and on rocky slopes.

It is a globular to short-columnar cactus that can branch from the base and form decorative clusters over time. Its main attraction is its large, intensely colored flowers, which appear near the tops of the stems. The classic grandiflora form produces predominantly deep red to crimson-red flowers, which are very large in relation to the plant’s size.

☀️ Growing conditions and care

  • Light: prefers a very bright position with direct sunlight. Plants previously grown in a greenhouse should be gradually acclimatized to intense sunlight.

  • Soil: very airy, porous and well-draining, with a substantial mineral component.

  • Watering: moderate during the active growing period; allow the soil to dry out thoroughly between waterings. Avoid excess water.

  • Flowering: occurs during the warm season in sufficiently mature, well-grown specimens.

  • Winter: benefits from a cooler, dry rest period with very limited watering.

  • Cold tolerance: LLIFLE mentions tolerance of approximately -7°C or even lower under favorable conditions; however, potted specimens should be protected from frost and kept in dry soil at low temperatures.

  • Fertilization: moderate, during the active growing period, using a fertilizer intended for cacti and succulents.
