We all want an exotic plant. Perhaps the most exotic one of all: a species from a greenhouse in Thailand, where the air is warm, the light is precisely filtered (or not), and atmospheric humidity can remain very high (around 90%..).
Then we place it in our apartment, next to a window where it receives (weak) natural light for a few hours a day, perhaps even above a radiator. The difference between these two worlds is obvious. The plant may arrive in excellent condition, but its adjustment is not guaranteed.
A plant shop can bring you the plant you are looking for. It cannot move the entire greenhouse (or country, climate) it came from along with it. What matters next is how well you understand its needs: the actual light in your home, how long the substrate takes to dry, the temperature near the window or radiator, humidity, and ventilation.
There is no need to look for someone to blame. Try to understand what has changed for the plant and what you can adjust without taking aggressive measures.
Remember: plants have a fantastic ability to adapt, but they need your help.
Do we provide the right conditions for the plants we buy?
Do we know the light, temperature, and drying rate in our apartment before choosing a plant? This question is not intended to discourage a purchase, but to help the plant transition more easily from the greenhouse to a new space—and help you enjoy it.
A plant may travel a long way from the grower to the store and then to your home. When you think about it, the journey is truly remarkable: some plants arrive by plane (Taiwan, Thailand, etc..), while others come in trucks, stacked and crowded onto carts.
Every move changes the light, temperature, humidity, and ventilation. Adjustment uses energy; therefore, some leaves may react after purchase even if the plant looked healthy when you bought it. It is NOT the plant’s fault.

What changes between a greenhouse and an apartment?
Light. In a greenhouse, plants receive uniform light from all directions throughout the day, while shading is controlled to reduce solar radiation to an optimal level for harmonious growth. In addition, greenhouses are equipped with ventilation systems, destratification fans, and fine-mist sprayers.
In an apartment, even a bright room may provide significantly less actual light, which is converted through photosynthesis into energy for the plant. The plant may lean toward the window or reduce its growth rate: this does not automatically mean it is sick—it is adapting.
Watering. The light and ventilation in a greenhouse accelerate the plant’s metabolism and, consequently, its water consumption. At home, the same substrate may dry much more slowly. Check the substrate and the weight of the pot before watering; do not follow a fixed schedule.
Roots. Nursery pots have drainage holes and allow air exchange around the roots. A decorative cover pot without drainage can retain water and damage the roots.
The first days after purchase
Choose a bright location suitable for the species from the start, away from strong afternoon sun and cold drafts. Avoid moving the plant frequently: it needs to adjust to a single microclimate, not be constantly “confused.”
Inspect the leaves, stems, and substrate. If the plant arrived with moist substrate, do not water it again just because it has reached your home. If water has collected in the cover pot, empty it—do not allow it to remain stagnant.
A cold or very hot parcel. If the plant arrives after winter or summer transport in a very cold or hot box, leave the parcel partially open in a room with a stable temperature before taking out the plant. Do not move it immediately next to a radiator, cold window, air conditioner, or into direct sunlight.
Very wet substrate upon arrival. Do not repot automatically and do not place the pot on a radiator to force it to dry. Put it in a bright location away from direct sunlight, with gentle air circulation. If it remains heavy, compacted, and wet for many days, check the roots.
What may be normal after transport. A slightly drooping leaf, temporarily halted growth, or a few older leaves turning yellow may occur during the first few days. Check more promptly for soft stems, a strong odor from the pot, leaves becoming translucent, spreading spots, or visible pests.
Light, watering, and fertilizing after adjustment
Light is the foundation. A plant that receives insufficient light uses water more slowly and will not benefit from fertilizing as it would in a greenhouse. Gradually move the plant closer to a suitable window while observing the foliage.
Adjust watering according to the substrate. When light levels decrease, water requirements usually decrease as well. Water pooling in the pot, among the roots, or in the cover pot encourages rot.
Fertilizing does not solve a light or root problem. Wait until the plant has stabilized and shows active growth; then fertilize moderately, according to the species.
What not to do right away
Do not immediately repot a plant that looks stable simply to change its pot or substrate. Repotting is useful when the substrate has degraded, the roots have problems, or the container is no longer suitable; read the repotting guide before taking action.
Do not cut leaves, roots, or stems without a clear reason. An old leaf may be lost during the adjustment process, while excessive pruning reduces the plant’s resources.
