Cryptanthus ‘Rubin Star’, also known as “Earth Star”, is a tropical plant from the Bromeliaceae family, valued for its unique appearance and vibrant colors. Its leaves are long, narrow, and arranged in a flat rosette, with slightly serrated edges. This variety stands out with shades of intense red, pink, and green, creating a spectacular effect. Cryptanthus ‘Rubin Star’ is an ideal plant for indoor spaces due to its compact size and low maintenance requirements.

Care

1. Light

Prefers strong indirect light to maintain the vivid colors of the leaves.

It can tolerate medium light, but colors will be more intense in good light conditions.

Avoid direct sun exposure, which can burn the leaves.

2. Temperature

The ideal temperature is between 18-26°C.

The plant does not tolerate cold; avoid exposure to temperatures below 15°C.

Make sure it is protected from cold drafts.

3. Humidity

Prefers a moderate to high humidity environment.

In dry spaces, periodically mist the leaves with water or place the plant on a tray with pebbles and water to increase humidity around it.

4. Watering

Keep the soil slightly moist, but not soaked. Water the plant when the top layer of soil is dry to the touch.

Avoid stagnant water, as roots can rot.

Use chlorine-free water or rainwater, if possible, to avoid mineral buildup.

5. Soil

Use well-drained soil, such as a Bromeliad mix or a cactus soil mix combined with perlite.

Drainage is essential to prevent water accumulation.

6. Fertilization

Fertilize the plant every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted liquid fertilizer for tropical plants or Bromeliads.

Fertilizing is not necessary during winter.

7. Repotting

Repot the plant when it becomes too crowded or when the pups grow enough to be separated.

Use a pot with good drainage and fresh soil.

8. Pruning and maintenance

Remove dry or damaged leaves to maintain a neat appearance.

Pups can be separated from the mother plant when they reach one third of its size and have their own roots.
