Adenium Obesum mix (caudex XL)

Adenium obesum , also known as the "desert rose" , is an exotic-looking succulent plant, prized for its thickened trunk (caudex) and large, brightly colored flowers , resembling those of plumeria or hibiscus. Native to the arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, it is cultivated both as a decorative potted plant and as a succulent bonsai.

🔹 Botanical characteristics:

• Habit: Perennial plant, slow growing and with a thick trunk, swollen at the base (caudex) , which stores water. In its natural habitat it can reach over 2 m, but in cultivation it is kept small, often between 30–80 cm .

• Leaves: Lanceolate, glossy, dark green, clustered at the tips of the branches. They fall in the cold season in the case of species grown in colder areas (semi-deciduous).

• Flowers: Large, trumpet-shaped, with 5 petals . Color varies from pink, red, white, purple, bicolor or with contrasting edges . Flowering occurs in spring and summer, sometimes in waves throughout the year, in ideal conditions.

🔹 Recommended growing conditions:

• Light: Preference for direct sun – minimum 4–6 hours per day. In the absence of light, flowering is poor and the caudex does not develop well.

• Watering: Reduced. Water only when the substrate is completely dry . During the dormant period (autumn-winter), watering is drastically reduced or stopped completely.

• Soil: Very well drained. Use a sandy or rocky substrate, especially for cacti and succulents, with the addition of perlite or pumice.

• Temperature: Heat-loving plant. It should be protected from temperatures below 10°C and away from cold drafts.

• Humidity: Prefers dry air. Does not require spraying.

• Fertilization: During the growing season (spring-summer), apply liquid fertilizer for flowering plants once a month.

• Propagation: By seeds (for interesting caudex shapes) or by cuttings (faster, but with a less prominent trunk).

• Shaping: It can be grown and shaped as a succulent bonsai , making it very popular in collections.

Adenium obesum is an exotic looking plant, combining the beauty of tropical flowers with an unusual trunk shape. It is ideal for large pots, sunny terraces and modern decors, but requires a minimum of careful care to maintain its health and spectacular appearance.
