Stenocactus coptonogonus, also known in horticulture by its older name, Echinofossulocactus coptonogonus, is a compact Mexican cactus that is easy to distinguish from many other Stenocactus species. Unlike species with numerous thin, strongly undulated ribs, it develops fewer, broad, thick and almost straight ribs, giving it a robust, geometric appearance.

The body is globular to slightly flattened, grayish-green or glaucous green, with areoles arranged along the ribs. The spines are relatively few but robust, ranging from cream to whitish-gray; young growth may have spines with reddish tones.

☀️ Growing conditions and care

  • Light: prefers a very bright position and can benefit from direct sunlight. During very hot summers, slight protection from intense midday sun may be beneficial.

  • Substrate: very well-drained, airy and predominantly mineral, suitable for cacti and succulents.

  • Watering: moderate during the active period; allow the substrate to dry thoroughly between waterings. Excess water must be avoided.

  • Winter: reduce watering considerably and keep the plant drier, especially if it is kept at low temperatures.

  • Humidity: prefers a well-ventilated environment and does not require high atmospheric humidity.

  • Temperature: appreciates warm temperatures during the growing season.

  • Cold tolerance: LLIFLE mentions tolerance down to approximately -10°C in dry conditions; however, for plants grown in pots, we recommend protecting them from frost, especially from the combination of cold temperatures and wet substrate.

  • Fertilization: moderate, during the active period, using a fertilizer formulated for cacti and succulents.
