Full description and specifications

Mammillaria longimamma is a species of cactus from the Cactaceae family, originating from the arid regions of Mexico. This cactus is known for its distinctive appearance and unique characteristics:

  1. Shape and dimensions : Mammillaria longimamma has a globular or cylindrical shape, reaching a diameter of approximately 10 cm and a height of up to 12 cm. Its stem is light green and covered with large, elongated tubers (protuberances), which is where the name "longimamma" (long mothers) comes from.

  2. Thorns : The tubers are covered with short and thin thorns, white or yellowish in color, but they are not very dangerous. Some of the thorns can be longer, forming a decorative structure around the stem.

  3. Flowers : One of the most beautiful aspects of this species is its large, bright yellow flowers. These flowers appear at the top of the tubers and can have a diameter of up to 4 cm. Flowering generally takes place in the summer season.

Light: Mammillaria longimamma prefers direct or partial sunlight. Place it in a place where it receives a lot of natural light, such as a window facing south or west.

Water: This species of cactus is drought tolerant . Water it moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), waiting for the soil to dry completely between waterings. In winter, considerably reduce watering or even stop it completely, because the plant enters a state of vegetative rest and excess water can cause rotting of the roots .

Soil: Use a well-drained substrate, especially for cacti and succulent plants. A suitable mix may include potting soil, coarse sand and fine gravel to allow good drainage. Avoid soils that hold too much water, to prevent rotting.

Temperature: Mammillaria longimamma prefers warm temperatures during the summer (20-30°C). In winter, it is important to keep it at lower temperatures (5-10°C) to ensure a vegetative rest. However, it must be protected from temperatures below 0°C, because it does not tolerate frost.

Fertilizer: During the growth period (spring and summer), you can use a special fertilizer for cacti once a month. Choose a fertilizer with a low nitrogen content and rich in phosphorus and potassium.

  • Do not fertilize the plant during the rest period (autumn and winter).

Replanting: Replanting is done every 2-3 years, depending on the growth of the plant. Choose a pot slightly larger than the previous one, with holes for drainage. When replanting, check the roots for signs of rot and remove any damaged parts.

Common problems

  • Root rot : Occurs due to excessive watering or poor drainage. Check the roots when replanting and adjust watering.
  • Pests : Mammillaria longimamma can be attacked by woolly lice or mites . If you notice such pests, treat the plant with specific insecticides or neem oil.
