Hoya aldrichii - fragrant flowers

Hoya aldrichii is an accepted species, endemic to Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean. It is an epiphytic vine with glossy, medium-green, elliptic foliage and visible veins. Under good growing conditions, it produces dense umbels of pink flowers with a pink-purple corona. The name honors Pelham Aldrich. It is a plant appreciated for its natural beauty. Foliage and growth. The leaves are elliptic, entire, glossy, rounded at the base and pointed at the tip. Floristic sources indicate approximately 7.5–15 cm in length and 3.5–6 cm in width, on 1–1.5 cm petioles; measurements vary with age. The veins are visible. The stems are glabrous, with a vining habit, and can be trained on a support or left to grow trailing.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers appear in umbels of approximately 15–30. The corolla is white, pink or pink-purple, while the corona ranges from pink to dark purple. The flowers are star-shaped, approximately 1–1.5 cm across, and may have slight pubescence. Horticultural sources describe them as fragrant, especially at night. Early flowering is not guaranteed. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Botanical identity and origin. The accepted name is Hoya aldrichii Hemsl., published in 1890. It grows as a vine in a humid tropical biome, frequently as an epiphyte on coastal terraces. Its horticultural similarity to Hoya cinnamomifolia does not negate its status as a distinct species.
