Dendrobium spectabile 'Dark'
Dendrobium spectabile is a spectacular species of epiphytic orchid (sometimes lithophytic), native to Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and nearby areas, where it grows in mangroves, humid tropical forests, or at low altitudes (up to 500 m).
The pseudobulbs (canes) are erect, strong, thin at the base and thickened towards the tip, reaching 60-120 cm (or more in mature plants – up to 3 ft+), with 3-5 large, leathery leaves at the apex. The plant becomes large and robust with age (mature at 8-10 years), ideal for spacious areas or greenhouses.
The flowers are absolutely unique and "out of this world": 7-8 cm (approx. 3 inches), with extremely twisted, wavy, and curly sepals and petals, giving a wild, exotic look. The colors vary – yellow-green with reddish-brown spots, mahogany, white, and irregular patterns, creating a "washed-out tan" effect or intense yellow with burgundy accents. The flower’s throat has a "hinged" mechanism that moves with the air, mimicking natural pollination. They have a pleasant honey-like fragrance, pronounced and sweet, especially under good conditions!
It blooms usually in winter-spring, on long axillary spikes (20-40 cm), with few to many flowers (up to 20+ per spike), long-lasting (6 weeks+). Mature plants can produce hundreds of flowers!
Flower size: approx. 7-8 cm
Note: The pseudobulbs of this variety are naturally colored in shades of burgundy-brown. This is the plant’s natural appearance and does not represent a defect. After the cold season, some specimens may have few or no leaves.
