Full description and specifications

Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum', also popularly called the Spider Plant, the Green Lily or the Bride's Veil, is a decorative apartment plant, originating in Africa that does not require special attention, is easy to care for and in addition purifies the air.
NASA places Chlorophytum comosum among the top 3 types of houseplants that are excellent at removing formaldehyde. It also removes carbon monoxide and other toxins or impurities.

Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum' care:

  1. The light:

    • Preferences: The plant prefers indirect, bright light. It can tolerate partial shade, but the leaves will be more vibrant and with a stronger contrast if the plant benefits from adequate light.
    • Avoidance: Avoid direct exposure to intense sun, which can cause burns on the leaves.
  2. Soil:

    • Soil type: I prefer a well-drained soil, rich in organic matter. A universal soil mix for indoor plants, combined with perlite or sand, is ideal to ensure good drainage.
    • Amendments: Add compost to improve soil fertility.
  3. Watering:

    • Frequency: Watering must be regular, keeping the soil evenly moist, but not saturated. During the summer, water the plant twice a week. In winter, reduce the frequency of watering, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
    • Method: Water the plant at the base to avoid wetting the leaves, which can lead to fungal diseases.
  4. Temperature:

    • Optimal range: Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum' prefers temperatures between 15-25°C. It is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate temperatures below 10°C.
    • Protection: Avoid exposure to cold air currents and protect the plant from sudden temperature changes.
  5. Moisture:

    • Preferences: The plant tolerates dry air well, but prefers a moderate level of humidity. In dry air conditions, periodically spray the leaves with water to maintain the necessary humidity.
  6. Fertilization:

    • Type: Fertilize the plant once every two weeks during the period of active growth (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer for indoor plants, diluted according to the instructions on the package. During autumn and winter, reduce fertilization to once a month.
  7. Multiplication:

    • Methods: Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum' multiplies easily through the young that appear at the ends of the stolons. Cut the seedlings with roots and plant them directly in well-drained soil. Also, the plant can be multiplied by dividing the bush.
  8. Common problems:

    • Diseases: The plant can be affected by root rot if it is excessively watered. Make sure that the soil is well drained and that the plant is not standing in water.
    • Pests: Periodically check the plant for aphids, red spiders and cosines. Treat promptly if infestations occur.
    • Brown leaves: The tips of the leaves can turn brown if the plant does not receive enough water or if the air is too dry. Increase humidity and adjust watering as needed.
