About Stanhopea
Stanhopea is a genus in the Orchidaceae family, described by William Jackson Hooker in 1829 and named in honor of the fourth Earl of Stanhope. Older names such as Ceratochilus, Stanhopeastrum, Gerlachia, or Tadeastrum also appear in the literature. Its natural range extends from Mexico to northwestern Argentina, in Central and South America, in humid forests from sea level up to very high altitudes (in some sources over 3000-5000 m, depending on the species).
Growth is usually epiphytic, occasionally terrestrial. The pseudobulbs are ovate, with a single long, elliptical leaf inserted apically. In nature, the aerial roots can grow upwards and form a nest where dead leaves and plant debris accumulate—a natural source of nutrients.

Flowers, fragrance, growing basket
Most species bloom mainly in summer; some also in autumn. The flowers are strongly spicy-scented (with spicy notes), but sometimes last only a short time: usually 3-4 days. The flower spike often emerges through the bottom of the growing basket, so the plant looks upside down if placed in a normal pot. Without large openings at the base or sides, the flowers have no way to emerge and can be lost in the substrate.
Stanhopea can bloom multiple times a year if the plant is vigorous and conditions are good. The most beautiful blooms appear on large specimens that are not excessively divided.

Growing guidelines
The temperatures, light, watering, and fertilizing below are approximate values. Tropical lowland and high-altitude species do not require exactly the same minimum night temperatures. Observe new growth, leaves, and the weight of the basket before watering.
Light, temperature, humidity
Light. Diffused but strong: approximately 25,000-30,000 lux, in the Cattleya range, without direct afternoon sun on the leaves. Direct sun causes hard-to-repair leaf burns. In summer, when temperatures exceed about 34°C, provide shading and additional misting.
Temperature. The genus combines tropical origins with mountain species, so many feel comfortable with cooler nights than a classic Phalaenopsis. As a general guideline, most tropical species require minimum night temperatures of about 12°C. Some endemic species from very warm areas (S. annulata, avicula, candida, cirrhata, ecornuta, grandiflora) prefer nights above 18°C to bloom well. Daytime temperatures can rise to 30-35°C if humidity and ventilation are adequate.
Humidity and ventilation. High humidity year-round; in summer, frequent misting around the growing area helps, not necessarily stagnant water on leaves in the evening. With high humidity, good ventilation is mandatory to prevent fungal and bacterial problems.
Basket, substrate, repotting
Container. Ideal: wire basket (or similar) with openings of at least about 1 cm, so flower spikes can pass through the base. Closed wooden baskets and standard pots often block visible flowering.
Substrate. Loose, light, hard to compact, with strong drainage: coconut fiber, medium-fine pine bark mixed with sphagnum, perlite, or osmunda-type fibers. From the store, a good starting point is Cattleya / Brassavola / Coelogyne Substrate (suitable granulation, airy); you can adjust moisture retention with a little sphagnum if the substrate dries too quickly.
Division and repotting. Do not divide excessively. The best blooms appear on large specimens left to form vigorous clumps. Repot rarely, about once every 3 years; frequent and aggressive moves can delay flowering up to 12 months. A good time is summer, immediately after flowering.
Watering and fertilizing
Watering. In the warm season, approximately 2-3 times per week, depending on temperature and how quickly the substrate in the basket dries. In very hot periods, you can supplement with daily misting. In winter, avoid watering leaves in the evening: this increases the risk of spots and fungal/bacterial infections.
For many species from Central America, do not let the substrate dry out completely in winter; they are sensitive to salt accumulation. Other species with drier winters in their habitat (S. hernandezii, insignis, jenischiana, leitzei, maculosa, martiana) require reduced watering in winter and good light; return to normal watering when new growth appears in spring.
Fertilizing. At regular intervals, diluted: about 25% of the label dose, roughly every 2 weeks. On bark, a formula richer in nitrogen (e.g., 30-10-10) is often used alternately with a balanced one (e.g., 20-20-20). Towards the flowering season, many growers switch to a formula with more phosphorus (e.g., 10-30-20). Water the substrate before fertilizing to avoid root burn.
Stanhopea does not need a classic rest period to bloom. If flowers do not appear, common causes are insufficient watering in summer, small day/night temperature differences in spring, or too low humidity.
Frequently asked questions
Why don’t I see flowers even though the plant seems healthy?
Check the container. If it is a closed pot, the spikes may grow downward and get stuck, having no way to emerge. Switch to a basket with large openings at the base.
What is the lifespan of the flowers?
Short to medium: usually 3-4 days, with some exceptions. The compensation comes from the fragrance and the possibility of multiple flower waves per year.
Do I need to divide it every year?
No. Frequent division delays flowering. Keep larger plants if space allows.
