Opuntia jamaicensis (Jamaica kaktusz) - ehető gyümölcsök
Opuntia jamaicensis, also known as Jamaica cactus, is a species of cactus from the Opuntia genus, native to Jamaica and nearby islands. This plant is adapted to dry and warm environments and is valued for its distinctive shape and resilience to harsh environmental conditions.
Size and shape: Opuntia jamaicensis grows in the form of flat, segmented stems called cladodes. This plant can reach heights of up to 1-1.5 meters (3-5 feet). The cladodes have an oval to rounded shape and are covered with small spines called glochids.
Leaves: Like other Opuntia species, Opuntia jamaicensis has small, temporary leaves that fall off quickly, leaving the cladodes to carry out photosynthesis.
Flowers: The flowers of Opuntia jamaicensis are yellow, with petals arranged around a center with numerous stamens. These flowers appear on the edges of the cladodes during the warm season.
Fruits: The fruits produced by Opuntia jamaicensis are round or oval, red or dark purple in color. The fruits are edible and can be eaten raw or used in culinary preparations.
Cultivation: Jamaica cactus is drought-resistant and prefers well-drained soils and full sun exposure. It is an ideal plant for dry landscaping and cactus gardens.
Cold resistance: Opuntia jamaicensis is not very frost-hardy and can be affected by low temperatures. It is suitable for USDA hardiness zones 9-11, where temperatures do not fall below -6.7 degrees Celsius.
