Hibiscus sabdariffa, commonly known as “red sorrel” or “roselle,” is a member of the Malvaceae family. It is a medicinal plant renowned worldwide. Roselle can adapt to a variety of soils in a warmer, more humid climate. Roselle is rich in organic acids, including citric, malic, tartaric, and allo-hydroxycitric acids. The plant is also known for its beta-carotene, vitamin C, proteins, and total sugar content. Containing various medically important compounds called phytochemicals, Roselle is well known for its nutritional and medicinal properties. Many parts of Roselle, including the seeds, leaves, fruits, and roots, are used in various foods as well as herbal medicine, as a potential non-pharmacological treatment. Different Roselle extracts play a crucial role in treating various medical problems, including many cardiovascular conditions, helminthic diseases, and cancer. The plant also acts as an antioxidant and is used in obesity management.

Hibiscus Sabdariffa can be grown indoors or in the garden. In Romania’s climate, the above-ground portion dies back over winter; however, it grows again from the roots during the following warm season, developing vigorously.
