Ginkgo biloba in pot - Pagoda tree D15
Ginkgo biloba (commonly known in Romania as the Pagoda Tree, Tree of 40 Shields, or Ginkgo) is one of the oldest and most fascinating trees in the world. It is a "living fossil" – the only surviving species of a family that existed since the dinosaur era (about 270 million years ago).
Description
- Shape and size: A tall tree, slow-growing at first, then moderate. It can reach 20–35 m in height and 8–15 m in width at maturity. It has a conical crown when young, which becomes wide, irregular, and elegant with age.
- Leaves: Very distinctive – fan-shaped (bilobed), with parallel veins. Light green in spring and summer, turning into a spectacular golden yellow in autumn, one of the most beautiful autumn displays in the garden.
- Fruits: Only female specimens produce "fruits" (actually fleshy seeds) that are yellow-orange in color, with an unpleasant smell (similar to rancid cheese or vomit) when they fall to the ground. For this reason, ornamental gardens almost exclusively plant male specimens (grafted or selected).
Main features:
- Exceptional resilience: withstands temperatures from -30°C to +40°C, urban pollution, strong winds, and poor soils.
- Longevity: can live over 1000–3000 years (there are specimens over 3500 years old in China and Japan).
- Leaves: unique in the plant kingdom – unlike any other modern tree.
- Autumn color: intense and uniform golden yellow.
Simple care:
- Light: full sun or partial shade (tolerates light shade well)
- Soil: very adaptable – tolerates almost any soil type (acidic, alkaline, clay, sandy), provided it is well-drained
- Watering: moderate in the first years; once mature, very drought-resistant
- Pruning: minimal, only to remove dead branches or shape the crown (done in winter)
- Fertilizers: does not require intensive fertilization
Recommended uses:
- Solitary specimens in large gardens or parks
- Street alignments (due to pollution resistance)
- Japanese or Chinese gardens (exotic appearance)
- Medicinal gardens (leaves are used in herbal medicine)
