Euphorbia pulcherrima (Steaua Craciunului) - Simbolul rosu al sarbatorilor
Euphorbia pulcherrima, known worldwide as the Christmas Star or Poinsettia, is undoubtedly the queen of seasonal plants. With its large rosettes of a deep velvety red, this plant instantly brings the magical atmosphere of Christmas into any room. It is the perfect classic gift and the centerpiece for the festive table.
🌿 Botanical characteristics:
-
Genus: Euphorbia
-
Family: Euphorbiaceae
-
Origin: Mexico (in nature it is a shrub)
-
Bracts: What we call the red "flowers" are actually modified leaves (bracts) meant to attract insects; their role is to protect the real flowers
-
Flowers: The true flowers are the small yellow buds in the center of the red rosette (called cyathia); if these are present and have not fallen off, it means the plant is fresh
-
Foliage: Dark green at the base, beautifully contrasting with the red tips
☀️ Growing conditions:
-
Temperature: This is the CRITICAL aspect! It loves moderate warmth (18-22°C); hates cold and drafts. Do not keep it near a door that opens frequently in winter or near an uninsulated window.
-
Light: Prefers a bright place with indirect light; protect it from direct and strong sunlight, but do not keep it in total shade if you want it to keep its vibrant color
-
Watering: Moderate. Check the soil with your finger – water only when the surface has slightly dried. Do not let water stagnate in the saucer (roots rot quickly), but also do not let the plant wilt from thirst
-
Humidity: Likes humid air, but DO NOT spray water directly on the red leaves, as unsightly spots may appear
💚 Advantages and uses:
-
Instant decor: Transforms any corner of the house into a festive space
-
Ideal gift: It is the perfect gesture when visiting during the Holidays
-
Durability: If protected from drafts and watered properly, the red "flowers" can last for several months, until spring
Note: The bracts may show natural variations in color and intensity, as well as small imperfections (spots, dry edges) that appear during transport or temperature changes – normal aspects for poinsettias in the cold season, without affecting the plant’s viability.
