Cattleya dowiana - a botanical species found in Costa Rica and Panama. It is a medium-sized epiphytic orchid that grows in moderate to warm temperatures. The plant inhabits the crowns of trees on the Caribbean coast, at altitudes between 250 and 1200 meters. It has cane-shaped pseudobulbs, ranging in height from 8 to 20 cm, which show prominent veins when dehydrated. When young, these pseudobulbs are partially covered by basal sheaths that decompose over time. Each pseudobulb bears a single fleshy leaf, elliptic-oblong in shape and light green in color. The plant blooms mainly at the end of summer and in autumn, developing a terminal flower cluster about 12.5 cm long, which appears on a mature pseudobulb. The flower cluster carries between 5 and 6 flowers, with a strong and complex scent reminiscent of lemon, spices, and vanilla. The flowers are large, extremely striking, with a lip in shades of cyclamen-magenta or burgundy featuring prominent yellow veining.

Flower size: approx. 25 cm
