Acer palmatum 'Brown Sugar' (also known as 'JWW7') is a compact Japanese maple cultivar, valued for its foliage, which changes color throughout the year, and its red shoots.

In spring, the young leaves emerge in chocolate brown or reddish-bronze shades. In summer, they become dark green, while new growth retains red accents. In autumn, the foliage turns intense orange and bright red. The young shoots are coral red, especially visible in winter after the leaves have fallen. It has an upright, bushy, dense and relatively compact growth habit.

Key features:

  • Chocolate brown / reddish-bronze young leaves
  • Dark green in summer, with red new growth
  • Intense orange-red in autumn
  • Decorative red shoots in winter
  • Compact, bushy form
  • Size: usually 1.5–3 m tall

Simple care:

  • Light: partial shade to gentle sunlight. Avoid strong midday sun, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Temperature: frost-hardy (down to approximately -18…-23°C, depending on the area).
  • Watering: keep the soil slightly moist, especially during warm periods. It does not tolerate waterlogging.
  • Soil: prefers slightly acidic, rich, well-drained soil.
  • Pruning: minimal. Remove dried shoots or correct the shape after the leaves have fallen.

Origin

Acer palmatum is native to Japan, Korea and China, where it grows in temperate forests. The cultivar 'Katsura' was selected in Japan for its bright seasonal colors, especially the spring yellow-orange hues, which are reminiscent of the Katsura River in Kyoto. It is one of the most highly regarded varieties thanks to its colorful display.

Possibility of turning Acer palmatum 'Brown Sugar' into a bonsai

Acer palmatum 'Brown Sugar' is an excellent choice for bonsai thanks to its small leaves, spectacular seasonal colors and slow growth, which make shaping and maintenance easier.

Height including pot: approx. 30 cm

The leaf color varies depending on the season and growing conditions.

⚠️ Disclaimer: Acer palmatum leaves are delicate and may show minor imperfections (marginal scorch, spots or tears), especially after transport or during periods of excessive heat. These characteristics do not affect the plant's health, as it regenerates its foliage during subsequent growing cycles.
