Selenicereus (Epiphyllum) chrysocardium - illatos virágok, nagy példányok
Selenicereus chrysocardium, also known as Marniera chrysocardium, is a spectacular epiphytic cactus native to the tropical forests of Mexico. It is valued for its long, flat, ribbon-shaped stems and large, fragrant flowers that are particularly decorative. The plant is ideal for hanging pots.
Stems: The stems are flat, succulent, ribbon-shaped, with wavy or serrated edges. They can reach lengths of 1-2 meters, making them perfect for hanging pots or creating decorative effects.
Flowers: The flowers are large (20-30 cm in diameter), white or cream, with very visible golden stamens. They are fragrant and open at night, attracting nocturnal pollinators. Flowering occurs on mature plants, usually under optimal care conditions.
Roots: The plant has aerial roots, characteristic of epiphytic cacti, which allow it to absorb moisture from the air.
Growth: It is a vigorous plant with rapid growth under favorable conditions.
Care for Selenicereus (Marniera) chrysocardium
Light:
- Prefers bright indirect light.
- Avoid direct exposure to intense sunlight, which can burn the stems.
- Suitable for indoors near east- or west-facing windows.
Temperature:
- Thrives at temperatures between 18°C and 26°C.
- Does not tolerate cold or temperatures below 10°C.
Watering:
- Water moderately, keeping the soil slightly moist.
- Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings.
- In winter, reduce watering but do not let the soil dry out completely.
Humidity:
- Prefers moderate to high humidity levels.
- Mist the plant with non-calcareous water on hot days or in dry environments.
Soil:
- Requires a well-draining substrate, specific for epiphytes or an orchid mix combined with cactus soil.
- Add bark, perlite, and peat to create an airy substrate.
Fertilization:
- Apply a weak liquid fertilizer (for orchids or cacti) every 2-4 weeks during the active growth period (spring and summer).
- Do not fertilize during the dormant period (autumn and winter).
Repotting:
- Repot every 2-3 years using fresh substrate.
- Hanging or wide pots are ideal to accommodate stem growth.
Propagation:
- Propagate by stem cuttings.
- Cut a piece of stem, let it dry for a few days, then plant it in well-draining substrate, keeping the soil slightly moist until rooting.
Specimens may also have leaves with defects.
