Full description and specifications

Rebutia muscula is a small, globular cactus, originally from South America (Bolivia and Argentina). It is popular among cactus collectors due to its attractive appearance and colorful flowers.

Description:

  • Shape : Rebutia muscula is a small, spherical or slightly flattened cactus, which rarely exceeds 4-5 cm in diameter. It usually grows in the form of a single globe, but over time it can form dense groups of plants.
  • Color : The body of the cactus is dark green, completely covered with fine white spines, similar to a layer of fur, which gives it a soft and fluffy appearance.
  • Thorns : This cactus is recognized for its fine, thin, white thorns, which form a dense, almost silky structure.
  • Flowers : Rebutia muscula produces spectacular flowers, large compared to the size of the plant, of intense orange or red-orange color. Flowers generally appear in spring or summer, at the base of the plant.
  • Roots : It has small roots that do not penetrate deep into the soil, which means that it adapts well to small pots.

Care:

  1. Light : This species prefers very bright places, but direct sun, especially during lunch hours, can cause burns. An intense indirect light or filtered sun is recommended. It can be placed on a bright windowsill, but away from direct sunlight.

  2. Temperature : Rebutia muscula prefers moderate temperatures, between 18-26°C during the summer. In winter, it can tolerate lower temperatures, even up to 5-10°C, if it is kept completely dry. This cold rest period is essential to stimulate flowering in the following season.

  3. Watering : Watering should be moderate, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. During the growth period (spring and summer), watering can be done once a week, but in moderation. During the winter, the cactus goes into rest, and watering must be reduced or even stopped completely.

  4. Soil : Rebutia muscle prefers a well-drained soil, especially for cacti, with a mixture of sand and perlite to facilitate water drainage. Soil that is too rich or with a high water retention can cause root rot.

  5. Fertilization : A liquid fertilizer, especially for cacti, can be administered once a month during the growth period. The fertilizer must be low in nitrogen, to prevent excessive growth and deformation of the plant.

  6. Repotting : Because it is a small cactus, repotting is not necessary often. It can be done after 2-3 years, when the plant seems to grow out of the pot or if the soil becomes too compacted. Use a small pot, because its roots do not need much space.

  7. Flowering : To encourage flowering, it is important to provide a rest period during the winter, when watering is reduced or stopped and the plant is kept at lower temperatures. This rest cycle stimulates the development of flower buds in the spring.

  8. Air : Rebutia muscle appreciates good air flow, especially if it is kept indoors. A well-ventilated space helps prevent the occurrence of fungal diseases or mold.
