Magnolia soulangeana – large, fragrant flowers (young specimens)
Magnolia × soulangeana, commonly known as Soulange Magnolia or Chinese Magnolia, is one of the most popular magnolia hybrids. It is the result of crossing Magnolia denudata and Magnolia liliiflora.
It is a small tree or large shrub, 4–8 m tall, with a moderate growth rate. The flowers appear in early spring, before the leaves, and are large, cup- or tulip-shaped, pinkish-purple on the outside and creamy white inside. Its floral display is one of the most beautiful sights in the spring garden. The leaves are broad and deep green, and fall in autumn.
Key features:
- Large, spectacular, cup-shaped flowers (pink and white)
- Early flowering, before the leaves appear
- Small tree / large shrub (4–8 m)
- Good frost resistance (down to approx. -20°C)
- Elegant appearance throughout the year
Easy care:
- Light: partial sun to full sun. Prefers a position sheltered from cold winds.
- Temperature: frost-resistant down to -18-20°C. Flowers may be damaged by late spring frosts.
- Watering: moderate during the first few years. Once established, it tolerates drier periods.
- Soil: prefers rich, well-drained, acidic or neutral soils. Avoid very alkaline, calcareous soils.
- Pruning: minimal. Prune only if necessary, after flowering.
Although this variety withstands cold without difficulty, young plants should not be exposed to temperatures below -10°C.
The height is approximate and is measured including the pot.
Note: During the cold season, garden plants are sold without leaves and shortened to encourage branching.
