Hoya 'Sunrise' is a commercial hybrid with elliptical, dark green foliage, visible veins, and reddish spots. In bright light, the leaves develop red or bronze hues. It has a compact, vining habit, suitable for training on a support or allowing to trail. The flowers are star-shaped, cream-colored, fragrant, and may develop a pink tint. The commercial parentage listed in the catalog is Hoya lacunosa ssp. pallidiflora x Hoya obscura, a cross attributed to Michael Miyashiro in 1992. Sunrise is not a botanical species.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are elliptical, with pointed tips, small to medium in size, with visible veins and occasional reddish spots or splashes. In low or medium light, they remain green. In intense light, the foliage may turn red or bronze, especially along the edges and on the undersides; this is not variegation. Young plants in stock are often green. The growth habit is compact, with short vines that can be trained on a support or allowed to trail.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are star-shaped, with reflexed petals, in shades of cream or yellowish white. In bright light, they may develop a pink tint. The corona is open and yellowish green. The recorded commercial duration for an umbel is approximately 7 days. The flowers are fragrant, with a sweet scent; intensity varies. Flowering depends on the plant's maturity and growing conditions.

Horticultural identity. 'Sunrise' is a hybrid cultivar. pallidiflora x Hoya obscura. Both parents belong to accepted species: Hoya lacunosa Blume and Hoya obscura Elmer ex C.M.Burton. The hybrid was produced by Michael Miyashiro in Hawaii in 1992. The cultivar name was subsequently published by Carol Noel. Materials labeled 'Sunrise' are also in circulation and may not necessarily match the cultivar standard.
