Hoya finlaysonii (splash leaves) is the selection with firm, elliptical green leaves, a prominent central vein, and irregular silver spots on the green tissue. The pattern is splash, not variegation; the density of the silver varies from one leaf to another. It has a vining habit. Under good growing conditions, it produces globular, cream-colored umbels with burgundy tips and a pale corona. The plant is marketed as a fragrant plant. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity.

Foliage and splash. The leaves are elliptical or oblong, thick and rigid, with green tissue and a clear midrib. The silver spots appear on the green leaf blade; they are not white-cream areas lacking chlorophyll. The splash density is not identical on every leaf. The shoots are vining, sometimes with bare sections. The decorative pot shown in the photographs is for styling purposes.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small and star-shaped, grouped in dense umbels. The corolla is cream-colored, with a burgundy or purple upper half; the corona is creamy white. Nectar may appear as droplets. In cultivation, the fragrance is often described as similar to cinnamon; its intensity is not guaranteed. The flowers last only a short time after opening. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted name is Hoya finlaysonii Wight, Contr. Bot. India: 38 (1834). It is an epiphytic plant native from southern Thailand to western Malesia: Borneo, Malaya, Sumatra, and Thailand. Penang is associated with the historical collection of the species, not with the origin of this particular lot. (splash leaves) describes the silver splash and not variegation.

The ceramic pot is not included in the price.

Substrate: use an airy, well-draining mix suitable for epiphytic species. We recommend the professional substrate for Hoya and Anthurium - SG Mix.
