Alocasia 'Loco' is a rare and unusual houseplant, prized for its unique and exotic appearance. It is part of the Alocasia genus, which includes large-leaved perennials native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and eastern Australia. This variety stands out for its spectacular leaves and is a popular choice among ornamental plant enthusiasts.

Physical characteristics

Leaves: Alocasia 'Loco' has large, deep green, glossy leaves with wavy, curved edges. The shape of the leaves resembles a heart or arrow, and the prominent silver veins create an attractive visual contrast. These features give the plant a sculptural and dramatic appearance.

Size: It is a compact plant, reaching heights of approximately 30-50 cm, making it ideal for smaller indoor spaces.

Origin and history

Alocasia 'Loco' is a cultivated hybrid , first introduced in 2010 by Deroose Plants of Apopka, Florida. It is considered a mutation of Alocasia 'Polly', a hybrid resulting from the crossing of Alocasia sanderiana and Alocasia longiloba 'Watsoniana'. The plant was reintroduced to the market in 2023, after almost disappearing from circulation, which emphasizes its rarity and value.

Care requirements

To thrive, Alocasia 'Loco' requires specific conditions, similar to its natural tropical environment:

Light: Prefers bright indirect light. Direct sun exposure can burn the leaves.

Soil: It needs a well-drained soil, rich in organic matter. We recommend a specific substrate for Araceae.

Watering: The soil should be kept moist, but not soggy. Excessive watering can lead to root rot, to which the plant is sensitive.

Humidity: Appreciates high humidity, ideally above 60%, to mimic tropical conditions.

Height with pot included: approx. 15 cm
