The Warczewiczella Orchid (ex. Cochleanthes) stands out with its bright green leaves combined with its large, shell-shaped flowers, which are most often a shining white with a lavender tint.
This orchid grows quite large, with leaves reaching up to 50 cm and flowers about 5 cm in diameter. There are only four orchid species in this small genus, native to Mexico, South America, Central America, and the West Indies.
Care instructions for Cochleanthes Orchid:
Although this genus comes from warm regions, the plants prefer a temperature between 18°C and 21°C during the day. Night temperatures can drop to 10°C - 13°C. Additionally, these plants can tolerate significant temperature fluctuations but do not handle temperatures above 29°C or below 0°C well.
Cochleanthes prefers lower light levels compared to many other species. They can be placed on east-facing windows to receive morning sun and shade for the rest of the day.
This genus loves water and should be watered abundantly. It is not good for the roots to dry out. Watering can be done every 2-3 days or sooner if the substrate dries out. The optimal humidity level is between 50% and 70%.
During the summer months, fertilizing is done once a week with rinses between fertilizations. In the winter months, fertilizing is done once every two weeks with a rinse once a month. This fertilizing schedule provides the plant with the necessary support to grow quickly during spring and summer.
The planting medium should retain water to ensure the plant has the moisture it needs between waterings. The substrate should have a good mix of Sphagnum moss, fine bark, and coconut husk fibers. Every two years, the orchid should be repotted to refresh its growing environment and prevent excess fertilizer buildup. Repotting is done at the beginning of spring when new growth appears.
Fragrant flowers: DAGen/Type: Zygopetalum Alliance
