Classic primary hybrid, registered in 1900–1901 by Thomas Statter: Paphiopedilum philippinense × Paphiopedilum rothschildianum. It belongs to the multiflora group (several flowers per stem). It inherits the vigor of philippinense and the floral impact of rothschildianum, and is considered one of the most successful crosses in the genus.
Paphiopedilum Saint Swithin is a slipper orchid with a rosette of long, green leaves. The 50–60 cm flower stem usually bears 3–6 large flowers. The dorsal sepal is white or pale yellow, with dark stripes. The petals are long and narrow, often pendulous, with streaks and spots. The slipper is yellow-brown, with veins. The flowers have a long-lasting display.
Main characteristics:
- Primary hybrid: Paph. philippinense × Paph. rothschildianum
- Multiflora: several flowers per stem
- Long petals with a spectacular appearance
- Faster-growing and easier to flower than rothschildianum
- No pseudobulbs
Simple care:
- Light: bright, indirect light. Multiflora/sequential-flowering varieties need more light than mottled-leaf Paphiopedilums, but no direct sun.
- Temperature: intermediate to warm, approx. 18–26°C during the day, with slightly cooler nights.
- Watering: do not let the substrate dry out completely. Water when it is nearly dry, then drain thoroughly. Avoid water in the rosette.
- Humidity: 50–70%, with good air circulation.
- Substrate: fine to medium mix, specific to Paphiopedilum (not the coarse bark used for Phalaenopsis).

Uses:
A collector's and indoor plant, with highly impressive flowering. Suitable for those who want a sequential-flowering Paphiopedilum that is easier to care for than the botanical species.
Note: After flowering is complete, cut the stem at the base. It has no reserves in pseudobulbs: irregular watering can cause significant damage. Repot when the substrate becomes compacted or breaks down.
A classic of the Paphiopedilum genus: large flowers, a multiflora stem, and more accessible growth than that of the parent rothschildianum.
