Sansevieria grandis, also known as Dracena grandis after the reclassification of the Sansevieria genus into the Dracena genus, is a perennial, succulent plant that belongs to the Asparagaceae family. Native to East Africa, especially Kenya and Somalia, this species is valued for its decorative, thick, fleshy leaves that can reach impressive lengths.

Sansevieria grandis features long, green leaves with lighter or darker vertical stripes that can vary in shades of green and gray-green. The leaves are erect, wide, and flattened, with slightly wavy edges and a waxy texture. The plant can grow up to heights of 90-120 cm, developing slowly and forming compact groups of leaves.

Care

  • Light: Prefers bright places but also adapts to partial shade. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves, so it is advisable to place it near a window with east or west exposure.

  • Watering: Sansevieria grandis requires little water, being a succulent plant. The soil must dry out completely between waterings. In warm periods, watering is done once every 1-2 weeks, and during winter, watering is significantly reduced, once a month being sufficient.

  • Temperature: Thrives at temperatures between 18°C and 27°C. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 10°C, as it can be harmful.

  • Humidity: Does not require high humidity. Normal indoor humidity conditions are sufficient for healthy growth.

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, porous soil. A mix for cacti or succulents is ideal.

  • Fertilization: Fertilization is not frequently necessary. Apply a diluted fertilizer for succulents once a month during the active growth period (spring-summer).

  • Repotting: It is done when the roots become too crowded in the pot. It is recommended to perform it at the beginning of spring.

  • Common issues: Overwatering is the most frequent problem, which can lead to root rot.
