Prosthechea Elfin (Encyclia Elfin) - fragrant flowers

Prosthechea Elfin is a primary orchid hybrid resulting from the crossing of two distinct botanical species: Prosthechea cochleata (often called the "Octopus Orchid" - Cockleshell Orchid) and Prosthechea prismatocarpa.

• Registration: The hybrid was officially registered with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in 1967 by L. DeGarmo.

• Genetics: As a primary hybrid (a direct cross between two species), it inherits the characteristics of both parents in equal proportions (50%-50%):

  • From Prosthechea cochleata, it often inherits the characteristic shape of the lip (the upside-down "shell", usually dark purple-black) and the tendency to have thin, twisted petals and sepals that hang like tentacles.

  • From Prosthechea prismatocarpa, it inherits taller, upright flower stems and often mottled petals (yellowish-green with dark-colored spots or markings).

• Appearance: The result is a spectacular orchid with flowers that combine an exotic "octopus" shape with vibrant coloring and spotted patterns. The flowers usually have cream-yellow or greenish sepals and petals, heavily spotted with purple or brown, and a prominent, dark-colored lip.

It is appreciated by collectors for its unusual appearance and, often, its ease of cultivation, as it is a vigorous plant.
