Hoya vitiensis - mature specimens

Hoya vitiensis is a vine native to Fiji, recognized for its velvety, gray-purple flowers with a yellow corona and red center. The foliage is elliptic-lanceolate, green, medium-sized, and not thick or succulent. The fragrance is subtle. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions. It is a good choice both for collectors and for those growing their first Hoya. The delicate foliage gives it an elegant presence.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are elliptic-lanceolate, with pointed tips and a visible midrib. They are green and relatively thin compared with succulent Hoyas. In cultivation, they are usually reported to be around 8–11 cm long and 3–4 cm wide. The growth habit is that of a vine: the shoots can climb or hang. The plant photographs show a specimen with long, uneven vines, without flowers, in a nursery pot. The decorative cachepot shown in the gallery is not included. Vine length varies from one specimen to another.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are flat and densely pubescent, with a velvety appearance. The corolla is gray-purple or lilac-gray; the lobe tips curve backward. The corona is pale yellow, with a burgundy-red center. The gallery shows an open umbel of this type. In cultivation, an umbel is reported to bear 10–20 flowers and may last for around 10 days. The fragrance is subtle and noticeable only up close. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted botanical name is Hoya vitiensis Turrill, published in 1915. The species is native to Fiji, where it grows as a vine in a humid tropical biome. The epithet refers to the archipelago, not to a cultivar.
