Hoya spartioides

Hoya spartioides is an epiphytic species native to Borneo, recognized by its almost leafless growth habit. The green, cylindrical stems are persistent, photosynthetic peduncles that take the place of foliage. The leaves, when they appear, are small and deciduous. Under good growing conditions, small umbels open at the ends of the stems, bearing orange-yellow flowers with white or cream coronas. The flowers are fragrant and last for just one night. The height, including the pot, is approximately 30 cm. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage and growth. This Hoya does not develop persistent foliage. The leaves are tiny and deciduous; photosynthesis takes place through the green, cylindrical peduncles, which can reach approximately 30 cm. The growth habit is trailing or shrubby, with thin stems resembling a broom. Stem length varies from one specimen to another.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small and arranged in umbels, with an orange-yellow corolla and a white or cream corona with a yellow center. They usually open at night and remain on the plant for a single night. They are fragrant; the perceived note varies, and we do not describe it as sweet. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Botanical identity and origin. The accepted botanical name is Hoya spartioides (Benth.) Kloppenb., published in 2001. The species is native to Borneo, where it grows as an epiphytic subshrub in a humid tropical biome, often on ant carton. Its range does not include Thailand or Malaysia. Historical names such as Astrostemma spartioides and Absolmsia spartioides are synonyms, not names used for sale.
