Hoya engleriana - rare species with strongly fragrant flowers

Hoya engleriana is an accepted botanical species from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, not Borneo. It is distinguished by its very small, fleshy foliage arranged on thin, flexible stems that form a delicate, trailing or climbing silhouette. The flowers are white to pinkish-white, with a pink-purple corona, and appear in small clusters. It is a species of interest to collectors, but its rarity and strong fragrance are not sufficiently documented to be guaranteed.

Identity and origin. The accepted name is Hoya engleriana Hosseus, published in 1907. The species is an epiphytic subshrub of the humid tropical biome.

Foliage and growth. The foliage is unusually small for the Hoya genus: the leaves are small, fleshy, and narrowly ovate to elongated, arranged on thin stems. Its flexible growth habit allows it to trail or be guided onto a small support. The compact leaf shape gives the plant a delicate, textured appearance.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small, with a white to pinkish-white corolla and a pink-purple corona, and usually appear in small clusters rather than dense, spherical umbels with many flowers. Horticultural reports about the fragrance are contradictory: some describe a subtle scent, while others do not detect any fragrance. For this reason, the fragrance intensity cannot be guaranteed for cultivated specimens.
