Hoya compacta 'Regalis' (albomarginata) D6

Hoya compacta 'Regalis' is a cultivar with twisted foliage and marginal variegation, also sold as albomarginata. The margins are cream or white, while the center remains green; new shoots may have a pink tint. This is true variegation, not splash. It is commonly sold as variegated Hindu Rope. The flowers are white or pale pink and fragrant. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions. The contorted foliage is its distinctive feature.

Foliage and variegation. The leaves are thick and waxy, twisted along the midrib, with short internodes; the vines hang compactly, hence the common name Hindu Rope. The cream or white edge is marginal variegation. The proportions of cream, white, green, and pink vary from leaf to leaf. Occasional silver splashes may also appear on the green tissue; splash does not replace the edging. The lighter areas are more sensitive: provide good light without direct sun. This lot is not the green form and is not 'Mauna Loa', which has central variegation.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers appear among the twisted leaves, white or pale pink, grouped in umbels. They are fragrant; in cultivation, the scent is often described as almond-like, without guaranteed intensity. The flowers last for several days, depending on the microclimate. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. As a taxonomic note: Kew (POWO) treats Hoya compacta as a synonym of Hoya carnosa. The commercial name remains Hoya compacta 'Regalis' (albomarginata). Albomarginata describes the marginal variegation. It has no native range.
