Gongora galeata-rufescens is a large epiphytic orchid, prized for its pendent stems and fragrant, unusually shaped flowers. Mature specimens need space beneath the pot so the stems can hang freely.

Light and temperature. Bright, filtered light, without harsh direct sunlight, supports healthy growth. Intermediate to warm temperatures and good ventilation are suitable; avoid very dry air during warm periods.

Watering and fertilizing. During growth, keep the substrate slightly moist and airy, without allowing the roots to dry out completely. Apply diluted orchid fertilizer during the active season.

Basket and repotting. An airy basket or a pot with very good drainage is more suitable than an enclosed container; the stems may emerge among the roots and need a clear path out. Repot when new roots appear, using substrate for vigorous-growing orchids.

Signs to watch for. Wrinkled pseudobulbs indicate a lack of water or damaged roots; soft bases indicate excess moisture. Do not cut green stems after flowering until they dry naturally.
