Full description and specifications

Frailea castanea is a species of small cactus, originally from the arid regions of South America, especially from Brazil and Uruguay. It is appreciated by cactus collectors for its compact shape and spectacular yellow flowers. Frailea chestnut is easy to care for, being a succulent plant that does not require excessive attention.

Description

Shape : Frailea castanea is a small, globular cactus with a diameter of approximately 3-5 cm. It has a dark brown color, hence the name "chestnut", which reminds of chestnuts.

Ribs : The surface of the cactus is divided into 13-15 well-defined ribs, with small tubercles on which very fine or almost non-existent spines grow.

Flowers : The flowers are bright yellow and relatively large compared to the size of the plant, reaching 3-4 cm in diameter. The flowers rarely open completely and, in many cases, the plant can form fruit by self-pollination before the flowers open.

Care

Light : Frailea chestnut prefers strong, but filtered light. Place it next to a well-lit window or in a place where it can receive indirect light.

Temperature : This plant prefers warm temperatures, between 20-30°C during the period of active growth (spring-summer). During the rest period (autumn-winter), it is good to keep it in a cooler place, with temperatures of approximately 10-15°C. Frailea chestnut does not tolerate frost, so it must be brought inside in the cold season if it is kept outside.

Watering : During the growth period (spring and summer), water the plant moderately, letting the soil dry completely between waterings. As with many cacti, excess water can lead to rotting of the roots. During the rest period (autumn and winter), significantly reduce watering or even stop it completely, depending on the temperature of the environment in which the plant is kept.

Soil : Use a well-drained soil, specific for cacti and succulents. An ideal mix may include potting soil, coarse sand and perlite to ensure good drainage and prevent excessive water retention. It is important that the pot has drainage holes to prevent water stagnation at the base.

Fertilization : Fertilize the cactus once a month during the period of active growth, using a special fertilizer for cacti, which is low in nitrogen and rich in phosphorus and potassium. In winter, fertilization is not necessary, because the plant is at rest.

Replanting : Frailea chestnuta does not require frequent replanting, because it grows very slowly. Replant it once every 2-3 years, using a pot of the right size, with fresh and well-drained soil. The ideal time for replanting is spring, before the start of the active growth period.

Common problems :

Root rot : This problem usually occurs due to excessive watering or insufficient drainage. It is important to allow the soil to dry completely between waterings.

Lack of flowering : If the plant does not bloom, it may be due to lack of light or inadequate temperatures. Provide it with a well-lit environment and a period of rest during the winter.

Pests : Frailea chestnuta can be affected by cosines and aphids. Treat infestations with insecticide specifically for cacti or use organic methods, such as insecticidal soap.
