Warczewiczella (ex. Cochleanthes) amazonica *fragrant

Warczewiczella amazonica (formerly Cochleanthes amazonica) is a fragrant orchid with large, glossy leaves and waxy, shell-shaped flowers. It is a tropical-looking species that matures into a generous specimen; the leaves can reach nearly 50 cm, while the flowers are around 5 cm across.

Care. Provide filtered light, away from strong sun; an east-facing windowsill is a good choice. Keep the substrate moist and airy, without allowing the roots to dry out completely or water to stagnate. Moderate temperatures and good air circulation are safer than prolonged heat and dry air.

Substrate and fertilization. Repot when new roots appear, using a mix that retains a little moisture while remaining airy; you can use substrate for Masdevallia, Promenaea and Cochleanthes. During active growth, apply diluted orchid fertilizer and periodically flush the substrate with plain water.

What to watch for. Crinkled leaves usually indicate dry roots or substrate that is drying out too quickly. Soft spots are more often caused by excess moisture and poor ventilation.
