Maxillaria atrosanguinea - A botanical species originating from Central America, growing epiphytically on trees, forming small-sized pseudobulbs.
It is successfully grown in autumn/winter on a bright windowsill or in a greenhouse. In summer, it prefers semi-shaded conditions, on a terrace or enclosed balcony.
The average ambient temperature can vary between 18 – 25 °C, but direct sunlight must be strictly avoided as it can burn and damage the delicate leaves. During the growing season, the growing medium should be kept constantly moist, but not wet.
Fertilization is recommended 1-2 times per month. In the autumn/winter months, the plant enters a resting period, requiring moderate watering, with the next watering only after the top surface of the growing medium has dried. Another recommended option is to completely replace watering during the resting period with daily misting of the leaves and pseudobulbs. Fertilization should also be stopped during this time.
