A botanical genus belonging to the Orchidaceae family, described by William Jackson Hooker in 1833, Zygopetalum includes species such as Zygopetalum brachypetalum, Zygopetalum crinitum, Zygopetalum ghillanyi, Zygopetalum graminifolium, Zygopetalum maculatum, Zygopetalum maxillare, Zygopetalum microphytum, Zygopetalum pabstii, Zygopetalum pedicellatum, Zygopetalum reginae, Zygopetalum sellowii, Zygopetalum silvanum, Zygopetalum sincoranum, Zygopetalum triste.
Zygopetalum populates humid forests at low and medium altitudes in South America, especially Brazil. Most species of the genus are epiphytic, but terrestrial taxa are also known, with glossy, folded leaves that have oblong, elliptic-lanceolate shapes, acute or acuminate at the tip. They show robust growth, with conic-ovoid pseudobulbs that lose their leaves during the resting season. They produce erect flower spikes about 60 cm long, racemose, bearing from a few to relatively many flowers. The spikes insert laterally on the pseudobulbs, and their length exceeds that of the leaves. The prominent bracts are equal in length to the ovary. Species of the genus Zygopetalum are especially noted and appreciated by collectors for their fragrant, waxy flowers with long-lasting retention, which appear several times a year and display a spectacular color range varying from white, green, purple, dark violet, burgundy, and dark pink, with various patterns of spots of different sizes.
The light required for the successful growth of these species should not exceed 30,000 lux, ideally represented by 70% shade, which is why many enthusiasts who cannot provide superior natural light conditions prefer this genus, which can be successfully grown indoors. An exception is made during the winter season when, on sunny days, the plants tolerate higher light intensity values because leaf overheating is not a risk due to the low temperatures.
The ideal temperature for growth falls within the intermediate to moderate range, with plants able to efficiently tolerate minimum temperatures of 3 – 5 ℃ and maximum temperatures of 32 ℃. The optimal growth range is between 16 – 24℃ during the day and at least 14 ℃ for nighttime temperatures.
The species of the genus Zygopetalum are humidity-loving, requiring a minimum of 60% relative atmospheric humidity, with higher values being definitely beneficial. It is necessary to ensure efficient ventilation of the growing areas, as humid and uncirculated air can facilitate the onset of fungal diseases.
Zygopetalum hybrids are much more tolerant – the hybridization process aims to produce plants that are easy to acclimate, as well as more spectacular flowers with superior characteristics (flower size, color, fragrance, etc.).
For growing containers, plastic and ceramic pots are recommended, slightly larger than the root system of the plants. The growing medium should be a mix of fine bark, sphagnum moss, perlite, and other materials that ensure high water retention while preventing water stagnation.
Repotting should be done only when necessary, usually once every 2 years. Watering should be done periodically, every 3–5 days in the warm season and every 5–7 days outside of it, but the best method is to adapt the watering schedule to the plant’s needs, which may vary depending on the period and microclimate. It is recommended to allow the substrate to dry out significantly before watering again.
Fertilizations should be done every 2–3 weeks during the growth period, using a dilution of 50% - 25% of the manufacturer’s recommended concentration. These can be applied both to the roots and foliage, ideally alternating the methods. Fertilizers with a balanced NPK formula are recommended. Foliar fertilizations should only be applied if very good ventilation of the growing space is possible.
Although Zygopetalum species do not require a well-defined rest period, it is recommended to grow them outdoors starting in early May, especially if there have been previous issues with flowering success. Choose a location sheltered from rain, wind, and direct sunlight.
