Syringa vulgaris ‘Michel Buchner’ is a classic lilac variety, valued for its abundant double flowers in delicate pinkish-lilac shades. In spring, the shrub produces large, highly fragrant panicles that attract pollinators and create a romantic effect in the garden.

It is one of the most fragrant lilac varieties and is especially valued for using its flowers in bouquets.

It is a suitable choice for gardens, courtyards, large terraces, or romantic landscaping, being one of the lilac varieties with a traditional appearance, yet highly spectacular during the flowering period.

Botanical characteristics

  • Outdoor ornamental shrub with deciduous foliage.
  • Double, fragrant flowers grouped in abundant panicles.
  • The buds have more intense purplish-pink shades, while the open flowers become lilac, sometimes with paler tones.
  • Flowering takes place in spring, usually in April-May, depending on the weather and location.
  • Highly valued for its distinctive lilac fragrance and the elegant appearance of its double flowers.
  • Suitable for solitary planting, decorative groups, or informal hedges.

Growing conditions and care

  • Light: prefers direct sunlight for abundant flowering. It also tolerates light partial shade, but flowering may be reduced.
  • Watering: moderate. After planting, it needs regular watering until established; afterward, it tolerates normal periods of drought well.
  • Soil: prefers fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. It does not thrive in heavy, permanently wet soils.
  • Fertilization: in spring, a fertilizer for ornamental shrubs or flowering plants can be applied.
  • Pruning: removing spent flower clusters after flowering is recommended. More substantial pruning should also be carried out after flowering, as lilac forms the flower buds for the following year during the growing season.
  • Cold hardiness: it is highly resistant to Romanian winters and suitable for permanent planting in the garden. It can tolerate temperatures of approximately -25°C / -30°C, depending on the location, plant maturity, and soil drainage.

What makes it special

  • elegant double flowers in pinkish-lilac shades;
  • strong and very pleasant fragrance;
  • large panicles, excellent for cut flowers;
  • very hardy and easy to maintain shrub;
  • one of the most highly valued classic lilac varieties.

Height including pot: 40-60 cm (depending on the season and horticultural work)

📌 Note: Syringa vulgaris is a deciduous shrub, and the appearance of its foliage naturally varies depending on the season. Starting in autumn, the leaves may turn yellow, develop spots, partially dry out, or gradually fall as the plant enters vegetative dormancy.

During the cold season, specimens may be delivered with reduced foliage, leaves with an aged appearance, or even no leaves, depending on the time of year and growing conditions. This is normal for the species and does not indicate a viability problem.
