Rhipsalis crispata ‘Amstel’ is a decorative variety of epiphytic cactus, native to the tropical forests of South America, where it lives on tree branches, avoiding direct sunlight. The plant forms long, green stems with wavy (“crisped”) edges, which arch gracefully, creating a cascading effect perfect for hanging pots or for decorating shelves and stands.

Botanical characteristics:

  • Scientific name: Rhipsalis crispata ‘Amstel’

  • Family: Cactaceae

  • Plant type: perennial epiphytic cactus

  • Habit: trailing, with segmented stems and wavy edges

  • Flowering: small, cream-white flowers with a subtle scent, appearing at the tips of the segments

  • Fruits: small, round, white or pink, which may appear after flowering

Growing conditions:

  • Light: bright indirect light; avoid prolonged exposure to direct sun, which can cause burns

  • Soil: airy and well-drained substrate, preferably a mix for epiphytic cacti (peat, perlite, crushed bark)

  • Watering: moderate; water when the surface of the substrate is dry to the touch, avoiding water stagnation

  • Optimal temperature: +18°C to +28°C; sensitive to cold, requires a minimum of +10°C

  • Humidity: prefers a moderate to high level, typical of tropical environments

Advantages and uses:

  • Distinctive appearance due to the wavy edges of the segments

  • Ideal for hanging pots or high positions, where the trailing habit can develop freely

  • Easy to care for, adapted to indoor life

  • Can be combined with other trailing plants for striking arrangements
