This variety has nectar-producing glands on the back of its leaves. The nectar serves to attract ants in search of food – thus, the plant gains chemical substances secreted by them, but also benefits from the aggressive way ant colonies defend their territory and food source, keeping the philodendron safe from other harmful insects.
Some specimens show slight variegation on some leaves (mottled variegation).
