Full description and specifications
Parodia penicillata is a small and attractive cactus, native to the mountainous regions of South America, especially Argentina. It is known for its fine, golden or white thorns, and for its spectacular flowers.
Description:
- Shape: Parodia penicillata has a globular or slightly cylindrical shape, growing to a height of approximately 5-10 cm and a diameter of 5-7 cm. The surface of the cactus is covered by numerous tubercles, which are organized in spirals.
- Thorns: Thorns are thin and thick, yellowish-white or golden in color. They are arranged radially and cover almost the entire body of the plant, giving it a pearly appearance.
- Flowers: The flowers are large compared to the size of the cactus, having a diameter of 3-4 cm. They appear at the top of the plant during spring and summer.
Care:
- Light: Parodia penicillata prefers exposure to direct sunlight or partial shade. Adequate exposure to the sun helps thorny development and abundant flowering.
- Soil: This species prefers a well-drained soil, specific to cacti. A mixture of sand, gravel and soil for cacti is ideal to prevent water retention at the roots.
- Watering: Watering should be moderate during the growing season (spring and summer). It is important to let the soil dry completely between waterings. In winter, watering should be significantly reduced.
- Temperature: Parodia penicillata tolerates high temperatures, but does not tolerate frost. It is recommended to be kept at temperatures above 5°C during the winter.
- Fertilization: During the period of active growth, it can be fertilized once a month with a specific fertilizer for cacti, diluted.
