Notocactus leninghausii, also known as the "Golden Cactus" or "Golden Cone Cactus," is a perennial, decorative cactus native to southern Brazil. It belongs to the Cactaceae family and is valued for its cylindrical shape and yellow-golden spines. It is a popular choice in cactus collections due to its beauty and ease of care.

Care for Notocactus leninghausii

Light:

  • Prefers direct sunlight but can also tolerate filtered light during intense exposure periods.
  • Indoors, place the cactus near a sunny window facing south or west.

Temperature:

  • Handles warm temperatures well, between 20°C and 30°C.
  • Is sensitive to frost; the minimum acceptable temperature is about 5°C.

Soil:

  • Requires well-drained soil, specific for cacti and succulents.
  • A mix of universal soil with added coarse sand or perlite is ideal to prevent water stagnation.

Watering:

  • Water the plant moderately in the warm season (spring and summer), only when the soil is completely dry.
  • In the cold season (autumn and winter), watering should be significantly reduced, almost stopped, to respect the resting period.
  • Avoid overwatering, which can cause root rot.

Fertilizing:

  • Apply a weak liquid fertilizer for cacti and succulents once a month during the growing period (spring and summer).
  • Do not fertilize during winter, when the plant is dormant.

Repotting:

  • Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows the pot.
  • Use a pot with good drainage and fresh substrate.
