Mediocalcar umboiense is a miniature epiphytic orchid species, native to the low mountain forests of Umboi Island in the Bismarck Archipelago, Papua New Guinea, where it grows at altitudes of about 600 meters. It has a creeping rhizome, small pseudobulbs, and fleshy, elliptical, green leaves grouped in clusters, about 2-4 cm long. It produces terminal flower clusters with solitary, bell-shaped flowers, colored in bright shades of yellow or orange with narrower segments, blooming simultaneously and visually similar to Mediocalcar decoratum, but larger in the vegetative parts. It is easy to grow in terrariums, preferring warm to moderate temperatures (below 30°C), high humidity, moderate indirect light, and well-drained soil, without allowing water to stagnate.
