Huernia Blyderiverensis
€8,95
Huernia blyderiverensis is an interesting succulent plant from the Apocynaceae family, native to South Africa, where it grows in dry and rocky environments. It is highly valued for its star-shaped flowers, which have a unique appearance and contrasting colors. Like other species of Huernia, this plant is relatively easy to care for and adds an exotic touch to any succulent collection.
Care
Light: Huernia blyderiverensis prefers strong indirect light. It can tolerate direct sunlight in the morning or late afternoon, but intense direct exposure may cause stem burns.
Indoors, it is ideal to place it near a well-lit window or in a spot where it can receive filtered light. Lack of light can reduce flowering and lead to elongated, pale growth.
Temperature: The plant prefers moderate temperatures, between 18-27°C during the day, making it ideal for indoor climates. During the winter rest period, it can tolerate lower temperatures but not below 10°C.
Avoid exposing Huernia to frost, as it does not withstand temperatures below 10°C.
Watering: During the active growth period (spring and summer), water the plant moderately, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as the plant is very sensitive to excess moisture, which can cause root rot.
During the rest period (autumn and winter), significantly reduce watering, watering only enough to prevent the stems from drying out completely. Usually, light watering every 3-4 weeks is sufficient in the cold season.
Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix, specific for cacti and succulents. An ideal mix contains potting soil combined with coarse sand, perlite, or gravel to facilitate drainage and prevent excessive moisture retention.
Make sure the pot has drainage holes to avoid water accumulation at the bottom.
Fertilizing: During the active growth period, you can apply a fertilizer for succulents and cacti once a month. A balanced fertilizer low in nitrogen is recommended to support flowering and plant health.
Fertilizing is not necessary during the rest period.
Repotting: Huernia blyderiverensis does not require frequent repotting, but you can repot it every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes too large for its current pot. Use a slightly larger pot and fresh soil mix.
The best time for repotting is early spring, before the plant enters active growth.
Propagation: The plant is easily propagated by stem cuttings. Cut a healthy stem and let the base dry for a few days before planting it in moist succulent soil. Within a few weeks, the stem should develop roots.
Common problems:
Root rot: This is the most common problem, caused by overwatering or poor drainage. It is important to let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Lack of flowering: If the plant does not flower, it may be due to lack of light or absence of a rest period during the cold season. Provide strong indirect light and a cooler environment during winter.
Pest attacks: It can be affected by scale insects and aphids. Treat infestations with insecticides for succulents or insecticidal soap.
Approximate height including pot: 15 cm
The plant is sold without flowers.
