Hoya retusa (Grass-Leafed Hoya)

Hoya retusa, known as Grass Leafed Hoya, is an accepted botanical species from western India and the eastern Himalayas. Its pendent habit and linear, flat, very narrow foliage give it an airy silhouette, distinct from broad-leaved Hoya species. The flowers appear singly or in very small clusters, with a white corolla and burgundy-red corona, while their fragrance is faint, with a light lemon note.

Identity and origin. The accepted name is Hoya retusa Dalzell, published in 1852. The species grows as an epiphytic subshrub in humid tropical biomes, and its slender, pendent habit makes it suitable for elevated displays.

Foliage and growth. The foliage consists of matte green, linear, flat leaves approximately 5–6 cm long and 2–3 mm wide. The tip is retuse, meaning slightly notched, a characteristic that gave the species its name. The leaves are arranged along slender stems, creating the grassy appearance associated with the commercial name Grass Leafed Hoya.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers appear singly or a few together, not in large umbels. The corolla is white, while the corona has a burgundy-red hue. The fragrance is faint and slightly citrusy, resembling lemon. Cooler nights may contribute to bud initiation, and once the buds have formed, it is preferable not to move the plant unnecessarily.
