Hoya Mathilde 'Splash' - developed specimens

Hoya carnosa 'Mathilde' (Splash) is a compact horticultural hybrid created in Belgium by Emilio Begine, valued for its small, rounded and firm foliage. Silver markings appear irregularly across the leaf surface and can vary greatly in density between specimens, vines and leaves. The plant has a trailing or climbing habit and combines the hardiness of Hoya carnosa with the miniature appearance of Hoya serpens. The finely pubescent, white-pink flowers are grouped in umbels and have a sweet fragrance.

Name and parentage. Hoya carnosa and Hoya serpens are accepted species. The hybrid does not exist as a naturally occurring population, even though the initial pollination occurred uncontrolled in a garden.

Foliage and splash effect. The leaves are small, fleshy, almost round to oval, green and densely arranged on slender vines. The silver splash markings vary in size and distribution, and their density is neither uniform nor guaranteed; a single specimen may simultaneously produce highly marked leaves and predominantly green leaves. The appearance of the plant received will not identically reproduce every leaf shown in the photographs.

Flowers and fragrance. Under good growing conditions, the plant produces spherical umbels with small, star-shaped and finely pubescent flowers ranging from creamy white to pale pink, with a darker center. The flowers have a sweet fragrance, often easier to notice in the evening. The number of flowers, shade and fragrance intensity may vary depending on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Commercial details. Vine length and splash-effect density naturally vary depending on the season, growth rate and production batch.
