Bulbophyllum rothschildianum, also known as Cirrhopetalum rothschildianum, is a botanical species from India, Myanmar, and Yunnan. It is valued for its fan-shaped inflorescences: many small flowers with burgundy shades on a light background open at the end of a seemingly delicate stem.

Appearance and Flowering

The plant remains compact, with ovoid pseudobulbs and a single leaf at the top, connected by a creeping rhizome. The flowers can form a fan about 15-17 cm wide. The articulated labellum can move slightly, and the fragrance is subtle but can be unusual for a scented orchid. Flowering often occurs in spring or autumn and can last 2-3 weeks, depending on the specimen and conditions.

Light and Temperature

Provide filtered to strong light, avoiding harsh afternoon sun. Approximately 15,000-25,000 lux can support better flowering; the plant can also grow in lower light, but leaf color and flowering rhythm may change. Moderate temperatures with slightly cooler nights are safer than prolonged extremes.

Watering, Humidity, and Ventilation

Water relatively frequently during growth but allow the substrate to nearly dry out between waterings. The species appreciates humidity, but standing water in the pot or around the pseudobulbs promotes rot. Constant ventilation is essential, especially when humidity is high.

Substrate and Repotting

Use a wide pot with many holes or a culture basket. An airy mix of bark, cork, coconut, or mineral components works well. Repot after flowering when new roots appear, without unnecessarily fragmenting the rhizome.

Fertilization and Dormancy

Fertilize diluted during the growth period and periodically flush the substrate to limit salt buildup. In winter, reduce fertilization and water less often, without letting the plant dry out completely for many weeks.

Important: appearance, number of stems, and flowering stage naturally vary between specimens.

Origin and Botanical Particularities

The species originates from South Asia, associated with India, Myanmar, and Yunnan province in China. It grows epiphytically in warm to moderately cool areas. The rhizome extends between pseudobulbs, leaving space between growths; this structure explains why the plant needs a wide pot and why division is done only when there are enough pseudobulbs and active roots on each side.

The flower is more complex than it appears from a distance. The lateral sepals are fused along most of their length, forming an elongated structure, and the mobile labellum can oscillate with air movement. Fine granules and tiny hairs on some floral structures become visible up close. These details make the species interesting for collections, even when its fragrance is not classically floral.

Flowering and Growth Rate

Flowering can occur twice a year, often around late spring and again in early autumn. Do not treat the calendar as a promise: plant maturity, light, and root health influence stem appearance. After the flowers fade, watch for new growth and new roots; this is the safest time for repotting.

Guideline Cultivation Parameters

In warm periods, many specimens respond well to days around 24-26°C and cooler nights around 18-20°C. In winter, it can tolerate lower temperatures if the substrate does not remain cold and saturated. High humidity is beneficial, but without ventilation, it becomes a risk; do not aim for 80% humidity if the air remains stagnant.

Water about 3-5 times per week only if substrate, light, and temperature justify this rhythm. In apartment conditions, first check how quickly the substrate dries. Between waterings, the substrate can approach dryness, but pseudobulbs should not be allowed to dehydrate excessively.

Preparing for Winter

At the end of winter, the plant may go through a calmer period of 1-2 months. Reduce fertilization and water less frequently, but do not stop watering completely for long periods. Light watering when the substrate dries is better than a severe drought period.
