Vanilla planifolia is the orchid from which natural vanilla is obtained. It is an epiphytic climbing plant native to Central America and Mexico, valued both for its economic importance and as an ornamental collector's plant.

It has long, flexible stems that naturally climb tree trunks. The leaves are thick, fleshy, and glossy dark green. The flowers are large, creamy white, very fragrant, but last only one day. After pollination (usually manual), vanilla pods appear, which are long, thin, and green at first, turning brown when mature.

Main characteristics:

  • Epiphytic climbing plant with long stems
  • Thick, fleshy, decorative leaves
  • Fragrant flowers (but short-lived)
  • Produces vanilla pods under optimal conditions
  • Vigorous growth in good light and humidity conditions

Simple care:

  • Light: bright indirect light or filtered morning sun (needs good light to grow and bloom)
  • Temperature: warm (optimal 22–30°C). Does not tolerate temperatures below 15°C for long periods
  • Watering: moderate to abundant. The substrate should partially dry out between waterings
  • Humidity: high (60–80%) – benefits from frequent misting or a humid environment
  • Support: mandatory – needs a pole, trellis, or moss support to climb

Recommended substrate: For Vanilla planifolia, an airy substrate with excellent drainage is recommended. → Professional substrate for Cattleya & Brassavola orchids – Secret Garden

Important notes about roots: Vanilla planifolia is a predominantly epiphytic orchid. In nature, it grows on tree trunks, and the aerial roots absorb moisture and nutrients. In pots, the root system is usually shallow and may appear underdeveloped or insufficient. This is completely normal. The aerial roots emerging from the stem are healthy and important for the plant. Do not try to force them into the substrate – they prefer to remain partially exposed or attach to a support.

A spectacular and useful plant, ideal for collectors or those who want a different orchid with the potential to produce natural vanilla in greenhouse or bright indoor conditions.
