Masdevallia nidifica var. alba is a rare white form in collections, where the light shades highlight the triangular shape of the flower and the filiform appendages of the sepals. Subtle differences of white, cream, or pale yellow can naturally appear between specimens.

About Masdevallia nidifica

Masdevallia nidifica is a miniature botanical species from Central and South America, reported from Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, and Peru. In literature, it may also appear as Buccella nidifica; the names Masdevallia cyathogastra and M. tenuicauda are also mentioned. It should not be automatically confused with Masdevallia ventricosa, a different species with its own floral characteristics.

The plant has short ramicauls, wrapped at the base by tubular bracts, each bearing an elliptic-lanceolate leaf about 5 cm long. The flower stem appears from the base of the ramicaul, slightly exceeding the foliage and usually bearing one flower. The elongated sepals, ending with filiform appendages, give the flower the specific silhouette of the Masdevallia genus.

Habitat and cultivation

In nature, the species can grow epiphytically on thin branches or lithophytically, in humid montane forests at approximate altitudes of 450-2,500 m. This origin explains its preference for a stable microclimate with filtered light, humidity, and ventilation.

Light. Choose bright shade or moderate light, approximately 6,000-16,000 lux. Keep the plant away from strong afternoon sun, which can quickly heat the small leaves.

Temperature. The approximate range of 12-26°C is indicative. The plant responds better to stable conditions than to large fluctuations, especially during very hot periods.

Watering and humidity. Masdevallia nidifica does not have pseudobulbs, so it does not have a large water reserve. The substrate should be kept slightly moist but aerated; do not let water stagnate in the pot. In small pots, check the substrate drying more often. High humidity works only together with good ventilation so that water on the foliage can evaporate.

Substrate. Use a fine, airy mix that retains moisture without compacting. The species is suitable for terrariums or mounts only if you can control watering and ventilation; a closed terrarium without air exchange can promote spots and infections.

What to watch for after purchase

Wrinkled or soft leaves may indicate dehydration or affected roots. Spots can appear when the foliage remains wet too long or when ventilation is insufficient. Do not force flowering by excessive fertilization: proper light, active roots, and a stable watering rhythm are more important.

About the ordered specimen

The plant is delivered in a 6 cm pot, with or without a flower, depending on the natural stage of development. The price is for a living specimen, not a promise of an open flower; stable cultivation after transport supports the next flowering.
