Oncidium varicosum var. insigne (Balduin Black) is a selection of the Brazilian species Oncidium varicosum (now often classified in the genus Gomesa). It is appreciated for its yellow flowers with dark spots and markings (reddish-brown or almost black), which give it a distinctive appearance compared with the classic pure-yellow forms.

The plant has ovoid, slightly flattened pseudobulbs, from which 2–3 flexible, lanceolate leaves emerge. It produces long, usually pendulous and branched inflorescences, which can reach 60–150 cm and bear numerous “dancing lady” flowers. It is a cool-to-warm-growing, vigorous orchid that flowers relatively generously.

Main characteristics:

  • Yellow flowers with dark spots and markings (specific to the 'Balduin Black' clone)
  • Long, branched, usually pendulous inflorescences
  • Pseudobulbs and leaves typical of the Oncidium/Gomesa genus
  • Moderate, vigorous growth
  • Classic “dancing lady” appearance

Easy care:

  • Light: bright, indirect light. It also tolerates filtered morning sun. Avoid strong midday sun.
  • Temperature: intermediate to warm (20–26°C during the day, 14–18°C at night). A nighttime temperature drop encourages flowering.
  • Watering: allow the potting medium to partially dry out between waterings. Water more regularly during the growing season and reduce watering in winter.
  • Humidity: medium to high (50–70%), with good ventilation.
  • Potting medium: airy, bark-based.

Recommended potting medium: For optimal root development and healthy flowering, we recommend Cambria Orchid Potting Medium from Secret Garden. → Cambria Orchid Potting Medium - Secret Garden

An excellent variety for collections of botanical orchids or Oncidium/Gomesa hybrids. Its long, colorful inflorescences make it particularly suitable for placement in hanging pots or on tall stands.

Note: Like most Oncidium varieties, it benefits from a drier period after the new pseudobulbs have formed, to encourage the development of flower spikes. The flowers have a long lifespan and appear more frequently during the autumn and winter season.

Height including pot: approximately 40–50 cm

The ceramic pot is not included in the price.
