Mammillaria parkinsonii is a distinctive Mexican cactus, appreciated for its globular body densely covered with white spines and for the characteristic way it branches as it matures. Also known internationally as the Owl Eye Cactus, this species frequently develops dichotomous growth: the growing point divides, and the plant gradually forms two or more heads.

The contrast between the green epidermis, well-defined tubercles, and white spination gives it a highly decorative appearance even outside the flowering period. Mature specimens may produce small, pale flowers with creamy-yellow tones and sometimes a darker central stripe, arranged near the top of the plant.

🌿 Botanical characteristics:

  • Botanical name: Mammillaria parkinsonii

  • Common name: Owl Eye Cactus

  • Family: Cactaceae

  • Origin: Mexico

  • Plant type: perennial succulent cactus

  • Globular body, becoming more elongated with age

  • Well-defined tubercles, characteristic of the genus Mammillaria

  • Dense, predominantly white spination

  • Slow-growing

  • Frequently develops dichotomous branching, forming multiple heads

  • Mature specimens can form spectacular clumps

🌞 Growing conditions:

  • Light: prefers plenty of light and direct sun. Specimens grown in protected conditions should be gradually acclimatized to intense sunlight.

  • Substrate: porous, predominantly mineral, and very well-draining.

  • Watering: limited; the substrate should be allowed to dry thoroughly between waterings. Excess water and moisture retention around the roots must be avoided.

  • Winter dormancy: during the cold season, it should be kept mostly dry, in a bright and well-ventilated space.

  • Temperature: prefers warm temperatures during the active growing period. While dormant, it can tolerate low temperatures if kept dry; however, potted specimens should be protected from severe frost and moisture at low temperatures.

  • Fertilization: moderate, during the active growing period, using a fertilizer intended for cacti and succulents.
