Hoya ruthiae is a climbing lithophytic species, described in 2015 by Michele Rodda from material collected in Sabah, Borneo. The foliage is lanceolate and light green, with grayish spots, and may develop reddish tones in brighter light. The sap is colorless. The flowers have an unusual, deeply lobed shape and are white-pink, with a yellow corona and purple center, grouped in umbels of 4–20 flowers. Before publication, the material circulated as Hoya sp. UT-168.
Foliage and growth. The species has a delicate, vine-like habit, with slender stems and long internodes. The leaves are lanceolate, fleshy, glabrous, and paler on the underside. The grayish spots and color response in intense light are characteristic features of the species. Its documented habitat is the limestone of Bukit Baturong; the plant does not tolerate excess water well.
Flowers and fragrance. The inflorescences are pseudo-umbelliform or globular. The corolla is rotate and deeply lobed, white with a pink tint; the lobes are narrow, with recurved tips. The corona is yellow, with a purple center. The number of flowers per umbel is 4–20, not a fixed range of 15–20. The plant is marketed as having fragrant flowers.
Botanical identity and the UT-168 label. Hoya ruthiae Rodda is an accepted botanical name, published in PhytoKeys 53: 84. The type specimen was collected by Ruth Kiew at Bukit Baturong, Lahad Datu, Sabah. The epithet honors Dr. Ruth Kiew, a botanist at the Forest Research Institute Malaysia. Hoya sp. UT-168 is a horticultural collection label, not a separate species; it circulated in nurseries, including in Thailand, before the species was named.
